As a woman we give selflessly…to our children, our husband, our family, our friends, our co-workers…and this seems like a positive thing and a good thing until you burn out, experience exhaustion and sickness and lose your very essence and sense of self.

How does this happen?

Think of yourself as a cup with energy.  It is impossible to keep pouring energy from this cup without stopping to fill it back up again.

It is impossible to stay healthy and take care of everyone else without taking care of your own needs and pleasure first.  Even on the airplane we are advised to put the oxygen mask on ourselves first before turning to help the passenger next to us put on their mask.

Here are some ways for Mothers to embrace self-care:


Women need plenty of sleep to function optimally, so begin by making sure you are getting enough sleep as this will affect your overall health and mood and cognitive function. 


Healthy eating habits will benefit both you and your family.  Look forward to your morning green smoothie instead of your sugary coffee.  Reduce sugar intake and embrace fresh fruits and vegetables.  Embrace yourself and your emotions instead of turning to food when you are emotionally needy.

When you take care of your own needs, you will be less needy and less co-dependent on others for your well-being.

Moving your body and getting out of your head and releasing stress is a wonderful way to incorporate self-care into your day.


Do whatever gives you pleasure.  What delights your senses?  A warm bath…beautiful flowers…sunshine and fresh air…a walk in the park…dancing…singing…a massage….a facial…candles…a romantic evening out…a sexy dress and heels…the ocean…kissing….
